First introduced in 2015, <Candle Generator & Egg Incubator> is a work on the immaterial and mental energy of ‘yearning’ in candlelight. In his book <The Flame of a Candle>(1961), Gaston Bachelard notes that ‘Of all the objects in the world that invoke reverie, a flame calls forth images more readily than any other. It compels us to imagine.’ Even now, countless candles are burning in temples or churches. Facing them, we imagineand yearn. Drawn to the powerful energy that the candles and their human beholders release, I wanted to transform this immaterial, mental energy into a tangible and physical form. The exhibition hall features an egg incubator, and ten candle generators that emit electric energy. Powered by the candle generators, and not the electric system at the exhibition hall, the incubators hatch the eggs by embracing them throughout the duration of the exhibition (20-25 days). I personally look after the baby chicks which have hatched from the egg and this action of tending is also part of the project. When I first introduced this work in 2015, some cast aspersions, claiming that it was animal abuse. Perhaps that may be true, depending on one’s perspective. As such, I have been trying to approach the whole process with extra care and respect, which in turn (albeit indirectly) affected the production, with the exterior changes in the piece as the prime example. The candle generators and egg incubators had simple features because their design was focused on necessary functions of the machinery. Recent iterations, however, began to present ornamental characteristics seen in religious art while retaining their mechanical function. The ornaments in the candle generator and egg incubator mainly bear ritualistic significance, such as wish-making and granting or yearning. Various ornaments are added to the machineries of the candle generator and egg incubator, fromstone lamps that illuminate Buddhist temples at night to lotus blossoms as symbols of longevity and cracked surface designs that are meant to prevent fire. I either handcraft these ornaments or produce them as collages using 3D scans of the actual objects. The combination of a functional scientific mechanism and seemingly superfluous decorative art, on the one hand signals my effort to shed typical and formal exterior shapes that machines inevitably carry, and shows my reflections on how two disparate approaches may be fused, on the other.
